We’ve all had eye-opening moments in our lives. The moments where you suddenly see everything from a new perspective and realize that you’ve gone down a completely different path from the one you should be on. For me that was in 2019 when I realized that the photography business I had started was not the calling that God had for my life. Business had steadily been slowing down and in my last year of photographing weddings, I only had 3 weddings for the year. I was frustrated and upset that I was working so hard and after 8 years I was dwindling. I was working a full-time job plus trying to get my business off the ground so I could one day work for myself and I was farther away than I should have been after 8 years. Why wasn’t this working? Why wasn’t God flourishing this business?
During a time of prayer and fasting I felt that God was calling me to something greater, my true purpose. What was that? Obviously, I know now, but at the time I had no idea what He had in mind. So, I took a leap of faith and decided to stop booking weddings and portrait sessions. I slowly closed my social media accounts, canceled memberships and subscriptions and then it happened- the Knot called me. If you’re unfamiliar with the Knot, it is a wedding database where newly engaged couples flock to build wedding websites, guest lists, find vendors, and start planning their weddings. When you’re a vendor for the Knot, you have to pay for tiered listings. The Knot accounted for 90% of my business and I had been on a waiting list for their “Spotlight Listing” (the top of the top) for about a year. Of course, it was now that they called and informed me that I was next on the list- this was my time to shine!
I can’t lie, I did hesitate – this was one day after I decided to quit photography. 24 hours. I could’ve purchased that spot and probably seen a huge increase in bookings, but I couldn’t shake what I felt God was calling me to do. So, after 8 years of wedding photography and portraits, Mee Photo came to an end. I photographed my last wedding in October and wrapped up editing in November. It was a bittersweet journey, but I learned so many lessons that I know are essential for this next chapter of life.
This verse kept ringing in my ears as I was wrapping 2019 up. I wasn’t sure what God had planned, but I was headed towards it. The more I kept praying the more God cemented this verse in my heart. I knew that whatever was coming next, I wanted the focus to be on the works that God was creating through me, and not ‘look at what I can do’. This time it wasn’t about Mee.
I can’t remember the day or place when I knew that God was calling me to build a branding and design company, but I can tell you that once it hit me – it made sense. And isn’t that how God works? He knows what we need. He knows when we need it. And He knows what we need to go through first to make it work.
